That doesn’t mean Kansas City is slowing down by any means! There are tons of fun family Labor Day Weeknd events planned!

Things to do for Labor Day in KC

Kidfest at Science City Union Station

Saturday, September 1st from 10 am to 5pm

Come to Science City for a day full of science fun! Kids activities center around STEM learning through hands on things to do. Kids can enjoy face painting, balloon artists, maker activities, hands-on sensory activities, science demos & so much more fun.

The event is included with Science City admission. Kids 3-12 $7.



September 1st – September 3rd

There will be FREE entertainment on the Main Stage and Community Stage, 400 arts/crafts/food vendors, a rootbeer chugging contest, ice cream eating contest, and a carnival at this Labor Day Weekend event.

It will take place on the Historic Independence Square in Independence, Missouri. All activities excluding the carnival are FREE. Come enjoy the festival all weekend, it is a great thing to do with the kids!



Float down the rivers at Schlitterbahn for the last time this season on it’s closing weekend. Cool off with your family on Labor Day Weekend! This is a fun family activity to do actually on Labor Day…

Open September 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. Saturday – 11 to 7, Sunday – 11 to 6, & Monday (Labor Day) – 11 to 5

This is Ocean’s of Fun‘s last weekend open as well, so if that is closer to you, that’s a great thing to do!


KC Irish Fest

Friday, August 31st to Sunday, September 2nd

(Open 5pm Friday, 11 am Sat & Sun to 11 pm every night)

This is an Irish Labor Day Weekend tradition in Kansas City. Join the fun with music and entertainment to celebrate Irish Celtic culture. There will be over 30 bands, workshops, comedy shows, a big kids’ area with things to do, & so much more family fun.

Kids 3-12 $7, Friday Adult admission $10, Sat and Sun advanced adult admission $12


KC Renaissance Festival

Open Saturday, September 1st to Columbus Day, 11 to 7 pm, rain or shine.

You do not want to miss out on the magic of the Kansas City Renaissance Festival! This Labor Day Weekend there will be a costume contest, candy corn relay, hula hoop contest, balloon toss, rootbeer chug, and a polish sausage eating contest. There will also be tons of shops, activities, and shows throughout the weekend.

Gate admission: Adult $21.95, Child $12.95, Senior/Student $19.50, kids 5 & under are FREE. Buy online and save. Hyvee, Walgreen’s and Menard’s offer discounted tickets. There is also free parking.


Check out the Sunflowers at Grinter Farms

There is free admission to the Sunflower Farm! You can take fun fmaily pictures and pick sunflowers to take home. There are 40 acres filled with rows and rows of gorgeous sunflowers; great photo opportunities!

Only pay $1 per sunflower bloom you pick! You can also visit the Sunflower General for baked goodies and souvenirs.


Watch Flicks on the Bricks at City Market

Friday, August 31st Preshow music at 8 pm, movie starts at 9 pm

Come watch Wayne’s World at the City Market! This is probably a good Labor Day Weekend thing to do with older kiddos…accompanied with 80’s & 90’s cover music.

There is free parking. You can arrive as early at 7 pm to grab a spot, so bring blankets and chairs!


Desoto Days

Thursday, August 30th & Friday, August 31st (6-10 pm) and Saturday, September 1st (10 am to 11 pm)

This is sure to be a fun Labor Day Weekend event! There will be a parade, classic car cruise entertainment, food, carnival, vendors, live music, and much more Labor Day Weekend fun! Admission is FREE for everyone, so you can enjoy this fun thing to do all weekend long.


Chiefs Day at the Kansas City Zoo

Saturday, September 1st 9:30 am to 5 pm

The Chiefs Kingdom is taking over the KC Zoo before the Chiefs take the field. There will be Chiefs cheerleaders, Warpaint & Susie, and KC Wolf will all stop by.

Wear your KC Chiefs gear to get $3 OFF general admission to the zoo on Saturday!

Cheetah Run at the Kansas City Zoo

Saturday, September 1st & Sunday, September 2nd at 10:30 am

While you are at the Kansas City Zoo for Chiefs Day, or if you come Sunday, be sure to check out the Cheetah Run exhibit. Watch nature’s fastest animal get some exercise as the two male cats stretch their legs!

Watch a Royals Game

There are Royals games throughout Labor Day Weekend for your family to enjoy

Friday, August 31st at 7:15 pm

Saturday, September 1st at 6:15 pm or

Sunday, September 2nd at 1:15 pm

There will be summertime fireworks all weekend long & tailgates for days! Grab your lawn chairs & come enjoy some baseball with your kiddos. Sunday is Family Fun Day at the K, so there will be tons of fun things to do with kids!

CowTown Family Fun Fest American Royal BBQ

September 15th, 11am -3pm

This event has been pushed back this year, located at Speedway Fan Walk inside the World Series of BBQ.  There will be a mechanical bull, face painting, pony rides, balloon artist, petting zoo, and much more! (see below)

Adults: $23 Kids: $8.  Ages 5 and under are FREE.
