Summer Reading Programs at Mid-Continent Public Library (Kids, Teens & Adults)
Now that summer is officially underway, MCPL has launched their annual summer reading program.
If your kiddos love to read, learn or explore this is an excellent program for them to join. Learn more about it below:
**Prevent the Summer Slide: Studies have shown that children participating in educational activities and reading during the summer can reduce the Summer Slide when your children are out of school. Keep your kids engaged with MCPL’s Summer Reading Program!
MCPL Summer Reading Program
The MCPL’s summer reading program is a fun way to get your children (& yourself) reading more. By completing different reading tasks, you can earn books & prizes.
The program is running now through July 31st, with programs for kids & adults.
How Does it Work?
After you register, you will track the number of books read from now to July 31st. You can begin logging books as soon as you register. MCPL utilizes the app Beanstalk to track books read, as well as provide updates and messages to participants. (Multiple children can be registered under one account)
The program awards points for the number of books they read, which go towards completing levels within the program. Children can earn 10 points for each book read or 1 point per minute reading. Points can also be earned by participating in virtual programs on MCPL’s Facebook or completing activities at home. (10 points for every activity completed) Children must read books in order to earn prizes – they cannot only complete activities.
- READING! (10 points per book or 1 point per minute read)
- Taking part in virtual programs on MCPL’s Facebook pages
- Completing fun, age-appropriate activities at home. A complete list of learning activities is available through the SLP online tracking system as of May 26. Kids and teens can earn 10 points for every activity they complete.
Points will earn prizes! For every 250 points earned, participants will win books and other prizes, up to 1000 points (see below).
What Can I Earn?
By participating and reading books, there are a few different community prizes you can earn in addition to free books.
With the points, children and teens can earn free books, as well as prizes. 1 free book is earned for every 250 points children earn. (1 level completed = 250 points)
Children can earn free books by completing the summer reading challenges. By participating that can also qualify to win fun prizes! These include multipl Kindle Fires, tickets to Science City (4 packs), Kansas City Chiefs prize packs, Kansas City Royals Prize Packs & tickets to the Kansas City Symphony’s Family Concert Series.
After earning 1000 points, children can choose between a 4th free book or Summer Library Program shirt.
Teens (13-19) can also receive 5 Teen Bucks for each 250 points, which can go towards earning prizes (like USB Power Packs, earbuds with case, aluminum water bottles, or books), library fines or a replacement library card.
Adults are also welcome to participate in the summer reading program. By reading books, adults can earn a tote bag or t-shirt, as well as be entered to win tickets for KFKF’s Throwback Throwdown concert. The concert is on August 22nd.
All community prizes will be given away in a drawing, which children & teens will be automatically entered in once they complete certain levels. The community prizes given away through Enter to Wins include:
- Kansas City Royals: A special prize pack of team swag
- Science City: A four-pack of tickets to the museum
- Kansas City Chiefs: A special prize pack of team swag
- Kansas City Symphony: A four-pack of tickets to a 2021 Family Concert event
