Summer Reading Program at Mid-Continent Public Library (Kids & Teens)
Now that summer is officially underway, MCPL has launched their annual summer reading program to celebrate Missouri’s Bicentennial and encourage kids to read at least 20 minutes per day.
If your kiddos love to read, learn or explore this is an excellent program for them to join. Learn more about it below:
**Prevent the Summer Slide: Studies have shown that children participating in educational activities and reading during the summer can reduce the Summer Slide when your children are out of school. Keep your kids engaged with MCPL’s Summer Reading Program!
The MCPL’s summer reading program is a fun way to get your children (& yourself) reading more. By completing different reading tasks, you can earn books & prizes.
The program is running June 1st to August 24th, 2021, with programs for kids & adults.
How Does it Work?
After you register, you will track the number of books read from June 1st to August 24th, 2021. You can begin logging books as soon as you register. MCPL utilizes the app Beanstalk to track books read, as well as provide updates and messages to participants. (Multiple children can be registered under one account)
The program will focus on reading for 20 minutes per day, counting the number of days children 0-19 are able to read 20+ minutes in a day. Be sure to log each day you complete!
What Can I Earn?
By participating and reading books, there are a few different community prizes you can earn in addition to a free book.
- Level 1: 20 Days = One book + one entry into branch drawing for four-pack of tickets from each Community Partner
- Level 2: 40 Days = One book + one entry into a drawing for a Community Partner grand prize
- Level 3: 60 Days = One book + one entry into a branch drawing for a Kindle Fire
According to MCPL, “Every reader (age 0-19) who reads for 20 minutes a day for 20 days will receive a free book and will be entered into a branch drawing to win a four-pack of tickets from one of the Library’s Community partners, including Science City, the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum, and the Kansas City Zoo!
Read another 20 days, and you’ll get a second free book and be entered to win a grand prize from one of the Library’s Community partners. And, if you can read 20 minutes per day for another 20 days (total of 60 days), you’ll get a third free book and you’ll be entered into a branch drawing for a Kindle Fire! “
